We will be back!
I recently sailed my boat, as one of a group of 22 boats from
the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, on a post-Christmas Cruise
to Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
Entering Newcastle, Marine Rescue was there to escort us
in – just in case we missed the 40,000 ton tanker coming out!
Again, on entering and leaving Lake Macquarie, Marine Rescue
and NSW Maritime were of enormous assistance in ensuring our
boats safely navigated the shifting sands of the Swansea Channel.
When one boat grounded Marine Rescue and Maritime were
there to assist and free her. On returing, Maritime escorted the
group ensuring a safe and touch-free passage. Local member for
Swansea, Yasmin Catley, was also very supportive in ensuring
the dredging of Swansea Channel in mid-December.
Our thanks go also to the management and staff at the
Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club for their welcome to the marina
and a very enjoyable New Year’s Eve. All 22 boats were berthed at
the marina and staff were there to assist with lines and provide
useful information for our several days at this delightful facility.
So a very BIG thank you to Marine Rescue and Maritime at
Lake Macquarie and at Newcastle, and to Newcastle Marina.
Your support, expertise, and friendly help was invaluable. We
will be back!

Robin Copeland provided some helpful comments on e-flares
in the January edition of Afloat.
I expect pyrotechnic flares will eventually be superseded by
contemporary products. In the interim e-flares can be carried
in addition to mandatory pyrotechnics. Roads and Maritime
will work together with nation-wide marine safety jurisdictions
to achieve the safest and most practical outcomes for boaters
in the longer term.
Roads and Maritime will continue to review the new disposal
service to understand improvements to be carried out in future
seasons. Afloat readers are welcome to give feedback to the
services on 13 12 36 or via the ‘Contact’ section of the Roads
and Maritime website.
