The biggest vessel built by Warren Yachts at their Kincumber
Yard was the 145ft Slipstream for Jack Cowan and Denis O’Neil.
Kincumber Creek was never going to be dredged by Austral
as Austral had nothing to do with the Slipstream build. Slipstream
did damage both her propellers during the manoeuvring out of
Kincumber Creek but not severe and once out and alongside at
Hardy’s Bay, the propellers were removed, repaired and refitted
(in the water) so to allow passage to Sydney.
Once in Sydney, she came out of the water at the Floating Dry
Dock at Garden Island, the propellers were removed and replaced
to check the fit and ensure all was OK ... it was.
The whole evolution of launching Slipstream and getting her to
Sydney so as to complete her commissioning trials, pack her up
for shipping to Europe was at that time, in 2000, a very big deal,
very complex and plenty of pressure on Dave Warren as well as
Iain Murray, the owners agent. In the end, all was completed and
there was no real drama as most of what happened was predicted.
You may well at this point ask, how would I know?
I was the Master that drove her out, I was the diver that
removed and replaced the propellers, I was the commissioning
Master and I was the Loadmaster that loaded her on the ship
that delivered her to Italy.
I am an avid reader of Afloat, the Greatest Yachting Publication
in print, and thought this information would interest other readers.

Warren Yachts Kincumber
Further to correspondence about Warren Yachts Kincumber
The vessel in the left of the two photos is the first Aussie
Rules. A Phil Curren designed 87.5ft Sports Fisher. The vessel in
The Garden Island Dockyard (GID) has the Captain Cook Dock.
The Fitzroy Dock is on Cockatoo Island Dockyard. The dock Mr
Skelton was alluding to (and Mr Courtney (Afloat May’16)) referred
to is of course Morts Dock at Balmain.
About 14 years ago I undertook structural surveys of the
caissons for the Fitzroy & Sutherland docks on Cockatoo Island.
While the Sutherland dock caisson was in very good condition,
the Fitzroy dock caisson was a different story.
Just getting it onto the floating dock at GID was a major feat
for Dockmaster Brad Lovegrove. The caisson required much
internal structure renewal and a large ‘shoe’ (sheath plate) was
fitted externally to the lower section of the hull structure.
Being an accredited Naval Hull Surveyor, I have done
extensive structural surveys on ex HMAS Vampire both while she
was in service with the RAN and more recently with the current
custodians the ANMM. It is my earnest wish the dear old Vampire
be removed to the Fitzroy Dock at Cockatoo if she fits (John Jeremy
would be able to verify this) or the Sutherland Dock so that the
public could view this wonderful Daring Class Destroyer from the
dock bottom. This would also mean a return to her birthplace.
Kincumber Shipyards and the
The letter about Kincumber Shipyards (Afloat Jul’16), was
accompanied by pictures of two vessels taken by launch truck
driver Dick Coates. One of Aussie Rules and another vessel Oscar.
To answer the question, the one on the left is Aussie Rules.
There were two Aussie Rules both of which were owned by Greg
Norman and the 228ft version was built in Western Australia at
the Oceanfast Shipyard.
The Aussie Rules in Dick’s picture was the first version built by
Warren Yachts (Dave Warren) and launched into Kincumber Creek
