Unsubstantiated allegations about
Like all Afloat readers, I was appalled by Cliff Lewis’s letter
(Afloat Nov’16) bemoaning “menacing” behaviour in Kogarah Bay
by jet skiers. His report that police and RMS staff were fairly
ineffectual is also disturbing.
Notwithstanding the gravitas of Mr Lewis’s concern, we must
be mindful that jet skiers in general are not unfairly demonised.
Mr. Lewis, in my opinion, weakens his case by claiming that he
had ‘read’ from an un-named source that jet skiers in the Georges
River had used the wakes of their jet skis to intentionally kill “rare
& endangered” Osprey chicks.
Unless he can show proof, Mr Lewis really needs to stick to
facts that he can verify with his own eyes.
Finally, I know that if this letter is printed, it probably will be
buried amongst letters of support for Mr Lewis. As editor, Mr
Copeland, I thought it would have been even-handed of you to
point out to your readers that as Mr Lewis’s serious allegations
about killing Ospreys was unsubstantiated, it must be viewed
with a degree of scepticism, unless of course proof of this crime
and its perpetrators could be verified.

To avoid painting all jet skiers with the same brush and ensuring
they are not unfairly demonised, Mr Johnston is indeed justified in
seeking proof of ‘cruel’ jet ski hoons destroying a rare bird’s nest. So
we have sought photographic evidence.
This photo of a man riding a jet ski close to the nest of an endangered
Osprey nesting on the Georges River was posted on the Georges
River Wildlife Facebook group page just after the October incident
took place. According to Roads & Maritime Services, “ T hree jet ski
owners have been identified and are assisting the investigation team
with its inquiries.” — Editor.
Save Goat Island
Over the last few decades Sydney Harbour is no longer the
working harbour it once was. It started as a working harbour
when the First Fleet in 1788 or even when our indigenous people
paddled around in bark canoes.
When the carpenter of HMS Sirius made a boat (a 10 ton Hoy
named the Rose Hill Packet or ‘The Lump’ as it was commonly
called) it was our first public transport and travelled from Sydney
to Parramatta, taking 7-8 days for the return trip.
Goat Island could be a place that tells the fascinating stories
of Sydney Harbour over the centuries, available for everyone to
see and marvel at.
Perhaps some Afloat readers would be interested in becoming
