Trying to find my
For the past seven years I have spent countless hours scouring
the upper reaches of the Hawkesbury and Sydney Harbour /
Parramatta River in search for my grandfather’s launch, but to
Papagayo was moored in Careel Bay from the time my
grandfather (A.P. ‘Perce’ North) purchased her in the early 1960s
until she was sold by his estate in 1974.
The picture is about all we have as we cannot locate any old
registration documents. The Papagayo nameplate was removed
at the time of sale. We believe she is a 26 foot launch built about
1930 and powered by a BMC diesel.

Six Metre yachts
Judith Pihl and
Sydney Wooden Boats is
halfway through a complete
rebuild of a Fife designed Six
Metre yacht Judith Pihl after
rescuing her from a paddock
in Yass. She is one of two six metre yachts built by Charlie Peel
in Melbourne in 1934. The other yacht was named Acrospire V.
We are searching for any information on both boats, and
hoping the readers of Afloat may be able to help.
Judith Pihl was built for Alf Watts and raced under the sail
number S13. The yacht was named after his grand daughter
Judith Pihl, and we are also wondering if she may still be alive.
Judith married and became Judith Baragwaneth. The yacht was
later sold to Sydney and raced with RPAYC under sail number
31. Judith Pihl was eventually renamed Juno.
We are also trying to find the yacht Acrospire V, she had a long
racing history, she was built for Joe White of Melbourne, and
carried the sail number S6. She was sold to Sydney in 1936 and
was owned by the Milson family who sailed her with RSYS and
was renamed Era. She raced for several years with RSYS and was
then sold and renamed Cettien. By 1948 she was sold to Len Esdaile
who raced her with RPAYC and renamed her Belvedere. She was
last heard of being sold in the early 1960s to the owner of Mona
Vale garage, and has since disappeared from the sailing scene.
We are trying to re-establish this class of classic sailing yachts,
and any information would be gratefully appreciated.

Does any reader know the whereabouts
of the 38ft ketch Ingrid designed by William
She was well known in South Australia
and won the 1952 Sydney-Hobart race
skippered by J.S . Taylor. Later, in the
1960s, she sailed in Sydney but little is know of her since then.

Where is Boorowa?
Some years ago I owned a great little
ex-trawler converted to a pilothouse gaff
cutter, named Boorowa.
I sold it to a chap named Vic in Hardys
Bay near Brisbane Water. He had her
looking great, he sold her on and the last
time I saw her she was in a sorry state in
Hinchenbrook Passage, I believe she was
road transported south and restored.
Does anybody know her fate?
