Iwas on my boogie board on a great wave
when I looked at the beach to see if any
one was watching my ride! All I saw was
my mate Bill signalling for me to come in. I
tried to find my footing in the shallows and,
as always happens when you stay out the
back catching wave after wave, your legs go
to jelly. Bill waded out to me.
“Hey Chaos. Can I give an old man a
“Easy on the old,” I said with a smile as
I struggled with removing my flippers and
trying to stand.
“ What’s the problem? I thought this was
our day off!”
“ The bloke you sold that huge Ganesha
to just rang. He’s having trouble trying to put
it in the garden and wondered if you could
come and help.”
“I suppose we should ... he paid a good
price for it.”
“ While you go and shower I will ring a
couple of the boys to give us a hand.”
“ Did you see the site when you delivered
“No, the truck just delivered it to the front
and I didn’t look out the back.”
I was ready when Bill came back with
“ I hope you are up for this, Chaos. One
of the boys has sailed with this bloke and
he describes his backyard as akin to the
slopes of Mount Everest. There’s a patch of
level ground about three quarters of the way
up the slope.”
“ That’s OK. We have had worse sites.”
“ I know but you haven’t heard the worst,”
Bill said with a wry grin.
“ The slope runs down to the water where
there is a jetty with a 60ft boat on slips ...
and the boat can’t be moved.”
“ What are you worrying about? We are
up the slope, well away from what’s at the
bottom,” I said trying not to look worried,
but didn’t feel any better when we parked the
truck on a steep drive and met the owner.
He wasted no time taking us out the back
where there wasn’t a level piece of ground.
my window and see it,” he said pointing up
to what I thought for a second was the sky.
Way up the mountainside was a small
clearing. We roped the statue which was
still in its wooden frame. Then we started to
haul the Ganesha through the wet ground
and up. We got it to the site and the boys
were breaking the frame from around it. I
was standing talking to the owner.
“Look out Chaos! The frame is going ...”
With that I felt my legs taken out from
under me and I was sliding down the slope,
it was fast but I was able to get to my knees.
I was nearly taken out by a large shrub which
broke and joined me on the frame. I could
hear someone shouting about the boat ...
I was more worried about my body when
we reached the bottom. The slide felt like I was
on one of those huge Hawaiian surf breaks. As
we hurtled down the slope I used my boogie
board skills to start going across the slope.
It was working well until the frame hit a large
rock. I became airborne and suddenly there
quick thought that I was going to hit the jetty
but I no sooner thought this than I became
aware that the slope finished and there was
a long drop down to the jetty.
I found myself in the air with the jetty
passing below me, and then I was doing a half
pike with twist hitting the water with a huge
splash. I came up with everyone yelling with
laughter and throwing their hands in the air.
“ Hey Chaos you still have it. What a ride
... a nd you seemed to be in control.”
“ Thanks Bill. It was nothing.” At the
same time thinking you don’t know how
worried I was.
“Come on get cleaned up the client’s
wife has made us baked king prawns for
