Seventy catamarans of all shapes and sizes made
the pilgrimage to Trial Bay, on the mid-north coast of
NSW, to sail in the Darren Lowder Memorial Regatta
from 11-12 March. Held in conjunction with NSW State
titles for Nacras, F18s and Arrows classes, sailors came
from Far North Queensland, Sydney, Canberra and all
over NSW to remember a young man who lost his life
twenty years ago sailing at this very spot.
Darren and his brother Trevor were pushing
their boat off the beach and the mast hit overhead
power lines. Darren died in the park in front of all the
families competing. A horrific accident but still vivid
in sailors’ memories. Darren loved catamaran sailing. To honour
his memory, his brother Trevor and their dad Brian Lowder from
Kurnell Catamaran Club ran Dazza’s Memorial Regatta with help
from friends from all over the country.
After weeks of storms and big seas, the weekend weather
cleared and the sun came out, with a pleasant SW 10-18 knots
on Saturday and NE 6-12 knots on Sunday.
Several generations of prominent sailing families gathered.
The Guinea family travelled from Queensland and competed
in Nacras. Youth teams were out in force sailing Nacra 15s
while multiple world champion Steve Brewin, sailing with his
stepdaughter Amy, was beaten by his young daughter Ashleigh,
his brother Chris and his 70-year-old father Richard.
The winners overall on yardstick, sailing a Taipan 4.9 Sloop,
were Andrew Williams and young Ashleigh Brewin. Second went
to Rohan Nosworthy sailing an Arrow and third to another Arrow
sailor Frank O’Rourke.
The F18s were well represented with a strong fleet of 15 boats.
F18 NSW State Title was won by father and son team Chris and
Richard Brewin, followed by Trevor Lowder and Ben Geisker with
Steve Brewin and Amy Giri third.
A fleet of 15 Nacra 5.8s competed for their state title which
was won by Queenslander Warren Guinea and Mark Phillips. The
youth were well represented with nine Nacra 15 class competing.
Jake Lidell and Emma Jones beat Lucy Nissen and Ethan Micaleff
by one point to take the NSW State Title in that class. Results

Darren Lowder 20th Memorial Regatta
at Trial Bay
Tanilba Bay SC Big Boat Regatta
The Big Boat Regatta was held at Tanilba Bay, Pt Stephens
on the weekend of 18-19 February when visiting crews from
Toukley, Mannering Park, Kurnell, Wallerawang, B16 and Royal
Prince Alfred YC were given stiff opposition from the locals.
Mike Colecliffe and young Laughlin Grech wrestled all day
with Ian Lamb and Bailey Hord (Toukley) for the Taipan Sloop
rigged class, while Zac Braeden had the Kurnell boys Anthony
Edwards and Ryan Graham nipping at this heels in the cat-rigged
Taipans. Brothers Ethan and Kyle Micallef from Mannering Park
fought their own duel while ignoring the advice yelled by dad
David on board the club’s rescue boat.
Kimberley Russell from Tanilba Bay Sailing Club acquitted
herself well as did Kurnell lad Craig Harden.
The club rescue boat was called on when Mark and Maddison
Hickey broke some gear but the Toukley crew were soon back
out after quick repairs.
The strong representation from Kurnell was rewarded when
first place went to Murray Makin and Grant Mowers. Second
was Niamh and Rohan McAdam from Toukley, John Kersh and
Brad Robinson (Toukley) third. Next Andrew Holly and Rory
Robinson from Toukley and Rory was given a small present for
being the Youngest Sailor.
Representing Royal Prince Alfred YC was the French crew
Nicola Celuan and Sophie Renout who had to battle both the
conditions and locals trying out their schoolboy French. Tres
bien. Jake Lidell and Emma Jones from B16s and Mark and
Maddie rounded out the field.
