Suddenly a sports car

“Do you mind if before we start we have something to eat and
drink; we’ve been on the go all day? ” the photographer asked Dan
as he got a carton of wine and glasses out of the coupe. We sat at
the top of the falls having a few drinks. I went and peered over the
edge, as I was not keen on heights. Dan came over.
“I ’ll go down first. Chaos, your next and Robin you can be up front,
the photographer will stand at the top and shoot the three of us.”
We got into position. I had to turn my head away so my glasses
couldn’t be seen as the shot was supposed to be in the late 1800s. We
all got sopping wet. My fancy chamois trousers were stuck to my legs.
“I couldn’t do that. It looked so dangerous,” the blonde exclaimed
to me. I ’d had just enough of the good stuff to reply, “ That’s nothing.
Watch this!” I leapt to the edge, turned to grab the rope, missed,
and headed backwards down the falls.
“Bloody hell!” I thought as the rock face flew past. That’ll teach
you to show off ... that’s if I survive when I hit the bottom.”
Luckily I landed with a huge splash in a pool about halfway down.
“ You all right there Chaos? ” Robin called down as I staggered
back up making sure I was all in one piece.
“ Yes, mate,” I yelled back. When I got to the top the blonde said
how brave I was to do a stunt like that. Robin and Dan just shook
their heads. I think I heard ‘crazy bastard’. We all ended up at my
place wet and cold where I cooked up a warming Chicken Soup. h

Iwas going through my library and came across an old paperback
that brought back a few crazy memories. I remember the day well.
I was just back from England and had a new set of trendy clothes;
chamois leather trousers, a pink t-shirt and red loafers. The height
of fashion ... or so I thought.
A friend, Dan O’Keefe, was a book publisher. He was doing an
8-book collection of true life stories; Great Adventure, Great Sporting,
Great Sea etc. To save costs he’d persuade his mates to model for the
front cover images. We didn’t get payed in cash but we were taken
out to a good restaurant, so it was a good lurk!
That Wednesday, Robin popped in to the digs where I was staying.
“Hi Chaos, I know this is short warning but Dan just rang to say
he had a deadline at the printers this Friday and he can only get the
photographer this afternoon so could we drop everything and meet
him at Oxford Falls in Frenchs Forest in about an hour. We have to
wear something that looks like we are having a climbing adventure
... a nd to bring a long rope.”
“Bloody hell. A rope? What’s he got in mind this time? The last
book cover was Great Crime Stories and we nearly hung Ernest as
a crooked card player when his huge Irish Wolfhound tripped the
chair and he fell backwards with the rope wrapped around his neck.”
“Dan said the three of us would be enough.”
“I ’ll bring a bottle of rum. I think we might need it.”
We jumped into Robin’s Toyota LandCruiser. Turning off the
Wakehurst Parkway at Oxford Falls, we powered along a bush track
through a roaring creek crossing where we were nearly submerged.
“Hey Robin, this is not a boat you’re racing.”
“ There’s Dan’s old car over there. Where’s the photographic crew? ”
“He’s on his way,” said Dan. “ They’ve been shooting up the
northern beaches, I hope they get here soon. The light is fading.”
Dan showed Robin and I where to place the rope which we’d
anchored to the LandCruiser’s bull bar. He wanted us to drop
