Calling Sonata Trailable
This season the Lord Mayor’s Regatta held
at the Illawarra Yacht Club will have a focus
on all Sonata class yachts and the Illawarra
Yacht Club invites all Sonata owners to join
The regatta will be held on Saturday
10th and Sunday 11th November 2018 and
has been going continuously since 1985. The
Lord Mayor’s regatta usually attracts about
20 trailable yachts from Sydney, the South
Coast of NSW and the ACT. At the Illawarra
Yacht Club there are three Sonata Class yachts
that sail regularly.

Yacht and Sports Boat
The Australian Sailing National Trailable
Yacht & Sports Boat Championship (for those
boats with an ATYSBR CBH rating), will be
hosted and conducted by the Royal Yacht
Club of Victoria from 3-4 November 2018.
Trailable Yachts and Sports Boats from
all over Australia are expected to attend
this event which is rotated around the
eastern seaboard states annually. The 2017
Championship was conducted at Port Kembla
Sailing Club, Lake Illawarra NSW, and the 2019
Championship will be hosted by a Queensland
The Championship will be sailed in two
divisions, with a division for Trailable Yachts
and a division for Sports Boats. The regatta
will be governed by the Australian Trailable
Yacht & Sports Boat Rule, of which Australian
Sailing is the custodian.

Merchant Navy Day
The Merchant Nav y Day commemoration
service will commence at 1100hrs on Monday
3 September at the Mosman War Memorial
adjacent to Allan Border oval, Mosman.
This is the second year that the Merchant
Nav y RSL sub-branch has conducted the

To commemorate the 75th Anniversar y
of Operation Jay wick (Australian/British
commando raid into Japanese occupied
Singapore) a remembrance service will be
held at Point Clare on 29 September 2018.
As part of the remembrance, a re -
enactment leaving from Lions Park, Woy Woy
will paddle to the Gosford Railway bridge
(replicating a training exercise conducted
on Brisbane Water in 1942). All paddlers are
invited to participate.

The 2018 National Championships are
being hosted by the Mawson Lakes Model
Yacht Club over the long weekend Friday
28th September – Monday 1st October.
The competition will run over three days.
Saturday through to Monday with Friday the
registration and practise day. Social events
are being organised and news about those
will be delivered closer to the event.

Renowned navigator and marine biologist,
Will Oxley, is to attend opening night at 2018
SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week to impart
his weather knowledge – and it is anticipated
the Townsville sailor will recount a story or two
on his vast experience as a yachtsman.
The Townsville Yacht Club hosted Magnetic
Island Race Week is to be held from 30 August
– 6 September.
Oxley has clocked up more than 250,000 sea
miles to-date, inclusive of five Whitbread/Volvo
Townsville talent Will Oxley to share knowledge at
SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week
Round the World races and 17 Sydney-Hobarts,
in which he navigated Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban to
overall honours last December.
The unassuming and highly respected
sailor also skippered Compaq in the BT Global
Challenge 2000/01 and filled the role of weather
coordinator for the Swedish Victor y Challenge
for the America’s Cup. Oxley also provided
navigation and weather ser vices for Puma in
the 2008/09 Volvo Ocean Race and others.

Magnetic Island Race Week visit the official
Davistown Putt Putt
Regatta & Wooden Boat
The Davistown Putt Putt Regatta weekend
kicks off on Friday 19 October with the Putt
Putt Charity Dinner at the Davistown RSL
Club. Last year’s event raised in excess of
$5,500 for the Kids with Cancer Foundation
Australia and was a great night.
Weather permitting organisers plan to
run an informal Putt About on Brisbane
Water followed by a BarBQ on the afternoon
of Saturday 20th October.
The waterfront at Davistown on the NSW
Central Coast will then be the focal point for
the Regatta on Sunday 21 October and this
year marks the 20th Anniversar y.
The Regatta provides a fun-filled, family-
friendly environment with up to 90 stalls
selling a wide variety of products and foods,
displays by local community groups such as
Rural Fire Service, Marine Rescue, local car
clubs and boats of all types.
