CYCA SOLAS Trusts has provided
RACQ CareFlight Rescue with $34,000 to
purchase and install two Flightcell DZMx
flight tracking systems, which will improve
the service’s search capabilities.
The additional equipment means the
two helicopters can be tracked using GPS
technology, which improves safety for the
crew on board and provides enhanced
coordination during a search. Emergency
services can monitor the area being
searched by the CareFlight helicopter and
direct other air, ground or sea assets into
“Last year RACQ CareFlight Rescue
helicopters conducted more than 140
search and rescue missions across land
and sea,” Ash van de Velde, CareFlight
Chief Executive Officer, said.
An on-board satellite connection will
also increase flight communications,
overcoming a range of interference
and reception difficulties currently
encountered from radio and mobile
RACQ CareFlight Rescue operates
from Sunshine Coast airport and is a not-
for-profit community rescue helicopter
service that watches over a region
extending 200,000 square kilometres into
New South Wales, north to the town of
1770, and from the Coral Sea to the Surat
Basin and beyond.

for the first time on 9 November in its new
$1 million offshore powerboat.
Competing at Hervey Bay and after
securing fourth in the pole position
shootout the new boat, named Maritimo
Australia, and its crew looked promising and
were among the lead pack in the first race.
However a hydraulic issue forced their
withdrawal in the second race.

1,000hp class and only needed to finish
the second race to take out the Australian
Championship. The crew were driver

Maritimo Offshore Racing
spokesperson Kurt Davies said Maritimo
Australia was like a Formula One race car
on the water and featured refinements and
design changes that were cutting-edge.
Davies said the new race boat had been
about 18 months in the planning, design
and construction stages, but only really
active in the last five months.
In its first hit out in the Supercat series
in Hervey Bay on Sunday it was running
two Mercury 525hp engines.
In 2014 or 2015 the boat will compete
internationally running a UIM engine rated
at 850 horsepower.
Maritimo sales and marketing
manager Greg Haines said the expertise
gained through the race team eventually
transferred over to the production boats.
“ The lessons learnt with this new race
boat will ultimately benefit our customers
when they purchase a family cruiser,”

lives of more than 38,000 people, at no
direct cost to those people saved.
The service’s iconic blue and yellow
helicopters and their team of pilots,
air crew, critical care doctors and flight

and serve the community through the
provision of rapid response critical care.
The CYCA Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
Safety of Life at Sea Trusts (SOLAS) was
set up as a charitable trust in 1999 as
a result of the tragic events of the 1998
Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Since they were
established, the Trusts have donated more
than $ 884,000 to organisations Australia-
wide and the Trusts continues to explore
new organisations to support.
