To assist poor Gary Jackson of Georges Heights with his
dilemma of having to reject his friends’ offers of free boats (‘Can’t
even give it away’ Afloat Dec’13), can he tell them, I will happily
assist them with taking a free boat off their hands – I was just
looking for an excuse to retire anyway.
In February, as per normal, the CCYA (Careel Cruising Yacht
Association) will be holding the Careel’s National Championships
on Lake Macquarie. This time, however, we’re also going to have
(from 21-23 February), a huge social event.
The idea is to get not only the current Careelers, but all the old
Careelers that we haven’t seen for years, to come along as well.
We are therefore calling it a Careel Muster.
To this end we have hired out part of Point Wolstoncraft
Sport and Recreation Camp on Lake Macquarie, and we’ll have:
Lodge accommodation if required (extra); Waterfront anchorage
for those who want to stay on their boat; Saturday night dinner
and BBQ facilities; plus a host of non-sailing activities for family
members including tennis, nature walks, swimming pool etc.

The parable of Smithy’s Christmas
While visiting Laperouse Museum I picked up your magazine
and discovered the fabulous John Quirk story of the Children’s
Christmas party (Afloat D e c ’13).
Most Christmas stories are nauseatingly sweet and
platitudinous ... mawkish in fact. John Quirk’s story was fun.
The plot was a solid yarn, tempting a reader to re-tell it – but
the real delight was the play on language, the never-faltering
quasi-biblical words, each one perfectly balanced, building into
Thanks to Afloat for giving me the opportunity to enjoy an
original literary gem, and congratulations to John Quirk, purveyor
of mirth and wit.

Wanted – boats for ABC TV series
The Secret River
We are currently in early pre-production on an ABC television
mini-series of the Kate Grenville novel The Secret River.
Shooting will take place on the Hawkesbury and in Melbourne
during July/Aug 2014.
Set between 1790-1820, the production requires us to source
several different types of vessels from the period.
In particular a 19ft skiff, a Thames Wherry, a single mast sloop,
a 5m dory, and a 20m sailing boat, as well as various other replica
boats. My goal is to find these – not the easiest task!
Having spoken to many of the historical organisations, I
would now appreciate hearing from any individual owners of
replica boats from this period, preferably located in NSW or VIC.

“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human
freedom. It is the argument of tyrants, it is the creed of slaves.”
I believe that we can all make an informed decision as to
when a lifejacket is needed.
